Cryo – What Are The Possibilities

A serious consideration for (indie) game developers is failure.  Statistics show that something like less than 1% of games are successful enough to be sustainable.  There are numerous stories of game developers that have put several years into the development of their baby, only to wind up a commercial failure/disaster/catastrophe.  One notable example is: Where The Water Tastes Like Wine.  The developer had put $140,000 of his own money into it, but it failed to recoup the development costs in sales.

Considering where the developer of WTWTLW has come from, I probably would have put in just as much time, money, and effort into it as he did.  After all, if I had already created a successful game, and if I had the one and only Sting doing the voice acting, I’d probably give my current employer two weeks notice.  It’s a very sad story indeed.

The martial arts imitates life, and it can teach you about how to approach things, how to react to things, how to live.  As Bruce Lee used to say in his lifetime, “I’ve learned all of these things from the martial arts”.

Having studied martial arts, I take from it one philosophy, which is that I’m prepared to die, or in terms of business, I’m prepared to fail.  Bruce Lee used to say, “the great mistake is to anticipate the outcome of the event”.  If you’ve never studied the martial arts, it may be hard to relate to the notion that when a fighter is engaged in a life and death struggle, it is a mistake to anticipate winning or losing.  “Just let nature take its course”, as Lee would say.

Cryo may fail, but if it does, it won’t be because of lack of trying–it’s self-funded, lots of time, energy, barely any sleep, tons of work to make Cryo come into being in this world of ours.  It may fail because it winds up being a dog crappy experience, or it may fail to convey anything meaningful to gamers, but if that is the outcome, then life goes on.  All effort into creating art, music, programming is done with the aim to reach self-expression.

Another aspect of why it’s OK for Cryo to fail is because statistically, 95% of all small businesses fail in their first year.  In other words, the chances are already slim of making it, whether it be selling bagels in a bagel shop, selling guitars in a music shop, or cutting people’s hair for a living.  If I fail, I want to fail at what I love and what I’m passionate about rather than something that I’d rather not do.  I’d rather have to stay awake 19 hours a day in order to bring Cryo to life rather than stay awake 19 hours a day running a shop, selling some widget that I find boring.

On the other hand, many developers say do not even consider making games for a living.  It’s very easy to see why they say this, and it seems reasonable.  If you are aware of the odds, and if you approach it like you would approach running any other type of business, then why the heck not go for it.  The thinking is that being a game developer is extremely hard but so is being an owner of a bagel shop, just in different ways, all kinds of ways.

Cryo – Final Version of Visual Novel

While Paul Ronin is in cryo-stasis, an updated version of the novel has been done with far better illustrations leading up to the real snapshots.  Click here to see.  The updated images were provided by this fantastic artist.

In the novel, see Paul’s hands in a BJJ, double underhand, cross grip.

Cryo Fight

You may ask what is the agenda in creating a visual novel.  Well, the agenda is to build a foundation to build upon later.  Paul has a passion for story-telling.  It’s going to be impossible to provide a AAA story in Cryo without AAA funding.  As such, when you experience Cryo, the game, it won’t have a AAA story-line.  Actually, the game won’t be story-based but be a type of horror, survival, first-person.  However, it is hoped you will enjoy experiencing the world of Cryo.  The goal is not just one game but plural, games.  Hence, Paul wanted you to get to know a little bit more about what it is like in the world of Cryo in a deeper way than just pictures and videos.

Paul originally wanted to share his story and world by way of something like The Longest Journey.  Needless to say, this is not physically, mentally, financially possible because Paul has a day job at CryoWorks.  Cryo, the visual novel, can only tell a tiny portion of the story to share down the road.

Speaking of day jobs, it slows things down to bring Cryo, but it’s coming along slowly.  The quantum flux energy is slowly but surely dissipating in an effort to reveal more and more of Cryo as things progress.  Remember that Paul lives in the year 2047, which isn’t that far ahead of 2018, but 2018 for technology is really ancient compared to 2047 technology.  This is another factor of why Cryo takes a long time to be realized as well.  We’re all in the same boat here where we’re all stuck with 2018 technology, but Paul is normally used to doing things the 2047 way.  Paul though sometimes complains about things when he should really just focus on the task at hand.  I don’t want to slap him silly though because he’s trying his best.

Cryo Audio Tools

Cryo’s audio interface is from the year 2047, but it is built with ancient 2018 technology.  Specifically:

  • FL Studio
  • Bias FX
  • EZ Drummer 2
  • Lethal Audio
  • Wiggle

The audio hardware for Cryo’s world consists of classic devices:

  • UR 22 mkII audio interface
  • Fender Strat guitar (scalloped neck)
  • Fender Bullet strings 0.9 guage
  • YJM pickups
  • Dunlop 1.5 mm picks

Cryo 3D Build Tools

The main modelers of this Cryo world were fathomed by Other Side Worlds, a colleague in arms.  Because Cryo is in flux, there is a bit of work yet to be done.  However, I’m from the year 2047, but my universe is being finished with ancient 2018 technology:

  • Unity 3D
  • Visual Studio
  • Lightwave 3D
  • 3D Coat
  • Gimp

As evil subverts the space-time continuum, the world I live in is still being built.  When Cryo is finished, and if you are emboldened enough to enter Cryo, you may not survive unless you are prepared to deal with evil.

Cryo Screenshots

This is my reality at the moment, and it is such for a time as the limit of my existence approaches zero.  As you gaze at these images, please note that the reality of my universe is in flux and is subject to change at the final call to fight evil.  It will not drastically change, but be forewarned that if you eventually enter into Cryo, you will experience something not seen before.  To quote a famous line: “you’re not afraid of the dark are you?”.

Cryo Concept Art

The very beginnings of Cryo were early constructions of these geometries.  The quantum reality at the time of these constructions were in a bit of a flux, but slowly over time, they were refined.  Refinements to these are here.

Cryo Introduction

Hello.  Have a peek at this for the gist of what my Cryo will be about.  See the visual novel, which is a prelude to what I’m really going to have to endure–Hell.  If you will be generous enough to help me through what I need to endure, I will give thanks to my God forever, and you will be blessed.

Together, we will fight evil and endure what some say is the worst kind of evil.  Brutality is here to kill me, but I am seeking your help in being able to destroy the evil that is attempting to claim my soul forever.
